Service No: 2222

Unit No: 20th Regiment of Hussars

Corps/Service: Mounted/ Lighthorse/ Cavalry

Country: United Kingdom

Sale Price: $0

I am searching for the missing service medals of my Grandfather: James Byrne CROGHAN 1862-1950 Irish by birth. Enlisted in British army at Liverpool on 5/11/1883 in 20th Regiment of Hussars, army no. 2222. Served with Lord Kitchener's expeditionary force in re-conquest of the Sudan following death of General Gordon in Khartoum in 1882. Arrived Egypt mid-June 1885. Took part in the battle of Ginnis (90 miles south of Wadi Halfa) v. the Mahdi's force of radicalised Islamists. A British + Egyptian Frontier Field Force victory, but mainly of significance as the last battle fought by the Brits wearing scarlet serge uniforms. Highest rank: private. Re-enlisted 1890 for Boer War, but remained on garrison duty in UK as then too old for South Africa. Medals awarded 1885: Khedive's Star and Egypt Medal (no clasp). These missing medals have not been seen for many years and any help in locating the medals would be greatly appreciated. I appreciate that they may be in the hands of a medal collector, but we would be very grateful to learn if the medals have survived or were thrown out.

Whilst his descendants are very pleased that the Memorial Plaque is being very well cared for by RSL staff, it is hoped that these medals can one day be reunited with the commemorative plaque.
