R.H.THORNTON
British War Medal
Corps/Service: Navy
Country: United Kingdom
I am searching for the family of Midshipman R.H. THORNTON who served during the Great War with the Royal Navy. This British War Medal was acquired by Merl Fitzgerald of New South Wales, Australia. The medal was previously in the possession of her Aunt who may have known this man when he was alive. His service number is not stamped on the edge of the medal, the inscription simply reading:- Midshipman R.H. THORNTON R.N. Any assistance that may be offered in returning this war medal to his family, would be greatly appreciated.

Death Plaque a.k.a Memorial Plaque
Service No: 3378
Unit No: 1
Corps/Service: Infantry
Country: Australia
I am searching for my great grand uncle's missing Memorial Plaque, also known as a "Dead Man's Penny" or Death Plaque. His war service medals are also missing and have also been listed seperately. The First World War Embarkation Roll indicates that he boarded HMAT Themistocles at Sydney on the 5th of October, 1915. He formed part of the 1st Battalion, 11th Reinforcements. James Albert LEWIS was killed in action in France on 5/11/1916 after initial reports of sightings of him being injured. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records indicate that he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial. He was the son of Leo John LEWIS and Annie LEWIS of Mornbrie Street, South Granville. We have receipts signed by his father Leo Lewis, so we know our family definitely received these medals. They have not been seen by anyone in our family for quite some years so we are unsure of what happened to them.
