A.E.SHORLAND
1914-1915 Star Medal Trio
Service No: 1
Corps/Service: Air Force/Flying Corps
Country: Australia
I am searching for the missing First World War medals of my grandfather Alexander Edward SHORLAND. The missing medals (consisting of the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal) were in the possession of my father before he passed away last year. My father mentioned that he couldnt find them 6 months before he died. According to the First World War Embarkation Roll, Alexander Edward SHORLAND was a Foreman Artificer Sergeant Major with the Australian Flying Corps and he embarked from Port Melbourne on the 20th of April, 1915 aboard RMS Morea. I only saw the medals once but I think there were 3 medals in all, one with his name and the number "1" on the back. ***NOTE*** MEDALS RETURNED TO FAMILY - NO LONGER MISSING

Unit No: 12

I am searching for the war service medals of my grandfather, Silas DANBY. These missing medals consist of:- The Distinguished Service Order, the Military Cross, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal. My grandfather, Major Silas DANBY D.S.O. M.C. (though awarded the rank of Temporary Lieutenant Colonel) served with the 12th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment. As these medals are a very substantial set, combined with the fact that his name is quite unusual - I am hoping that somebody out there knows of their whereabouts and is prepared to tell my family that they are safe or better still, be willing to help us to recover these missing war medals. One or more of the medals may be inscribed with the numbers L.G. 31085 or E/1420, but this is not confirmed. Any assistance that you are prepared to offer would be deeply appreciated. The photograph to which this listing relates is of the miniatures of Silas DANBY which are still in our possession.

C.H.CRESSWELL
1914-1915 Star Medal Trio
Service No: 312
Unit No: 8
Corps/Service: Mounted/ Lighthorse/ Cavalry
Country: Australia
The following war medals failed to sell at an auction hosted by Phoenix Auctions, Western Australia around the 13th of February, 2011. The First World War medals were awarded to 8th Light Horse Trio -A tragic, 1914-15 Star; British War veteran, Private Corbett Henry CRESSWELL. The medals consist of a 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal awarded to 312 Pte C.H. Cresswell 8LHR A.I.F. Pte Cresswell enlisted from the Warrigul district of country Victoria as 20 year old farmer. He was present with the 8th Light Horse Regiment on the 7th August, 1915 during the fatal charge at The NEK. No documentation remains to say if he was present at the charge (he was not wounded or KIA). However there is documentary evidence to state that on the 13th of August he was admitted to a field aid post with shell shock as a result of a “high explosion” in a dug out. This “shell shock” could also have been sustained, one can imagine, not only as a result of the shell hit but also from the loss of so many of his comrades the week earlier which must have had a profound effect on such a young person. He was evacuated from the peninsula only to be diagnosed with Enteric fever, as well while recovering. He was later repatriated back to Australia in 1916 only to die in 1921 from what one can only assume was probably war related from his injuries incurred during his time on Gallipoli.
