The missing Boer War Medal (Queen’s South Africa Medal) with five clasps and the First World War medals (British War Medal & Victory Medal) of Herman Augustus ARNOLD are being sought by his descendants. These medals may be mounted with a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and have not been seen since the 1970’s.

Herman Augustus ARNOLD served during the Boer War (Second South Africa War 1899 – 1902) with the 3rd New South Wales Mounted Rifles. He survived this campaign and re-enlisted into the First AIF (Australian Imperial Force) for service during the Great War of 1914 – 1918.

Interestingly, the First World War Embarkation Roll records his name as Hermann Augustin ARNOLD. He left Australia as a member of the 36th Infantry Battalion about HMAT Beltana (A72) on the 13th of May, 1916. Subsequently, he was not entitled to the 1914-1915 Star.
As previously stated, these missing war service medals have not been seen for some time. His grand daughter Helen Thomson hopes these medals are in the hands of a collector who values the medals and is keeping them safe. She would be very grateful if the current owner of the medals would consider selling them back to the family. Alternatively if the collector wishes to retain the medals, would they consider simply making contact with her family to acknowledge that the medals have not ended up being destroyed or disposed of into landfill, as many medals have met such a fate over the years.
Helen can be contacted via this website or by contacting the Medals Gone Missing Administrator via telephone 0449 692401.
