WW2 Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Aircrew Europe Star Killed In Action (KIA) medal group to 425175 Flight Sergeant Stephen McCarthy LIST. F/Sgt List was serving with 49 SQN RAF when he was KIA during a bombing mission to Dusseldorf 3rd November 1943 flying in Lancaster JB.305. F/Sgt was a rear air gunner on the aircraft. The raid on Dusseldorf was an operation mounted by bomber command which consisted of some 600 aircraft, 49 SQN contributed 18 aircraft to this operation. F/Sgt List is buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery Cleves in Germany. The Lancaster was piloted by F/Lt Carefoot an experienced pilot. During the raid over Dusseldorf, the Lancaster became “Coned” in searchlights and almost instantly suffered hits from heavy FLAK. Sgt Church the crew’s navigator recalls the final moments of the aircraft in this extract from the research: “Flak set the port wing on fire and the next moment tracer shells from an attackin JU88 passed inches in front of my chest (Sgt Wood), the W/Op, was killed instantly during this attack. The pilot ordered us all the bale out, but first he asked me to check if the rear gunner was OK; just then over the intercom, the Aussie voice of F/Sgt List confirmed that he had infact heard the bale out order. I then put on my chute on and followed the flight engineer, Sgt Mason down the steps into the nose ready to jump; F/Lt Carefoot, silhouetted by the flames from the blazing wing as he held our doomed Lanc as steady as a rock….he just waved…I think we both knew then that he wasn’t going to make it.” Just those three members who jumped from the nose hatch survived; Sgt Church believes that the Lancaster must have exploded shortly after he left the aircraft. Crew onboard the Lancaster were; F/Lt N.H Carefoot – Pilot (Killed) Sgt J.S Mason – Flt Engineer (POW) Sgt H.D Church – Navigator (POW) Sgt H.L Wood – Wireless/Air Gunner (Killed) Sgt W.H Marson – Air Gunner (Killed) F/Sgt S.G Putnam – Bomb Aimer (POW) F/Sgt S.M List – Air Gunner (Killed) Group consists of 5 correctly named medals: 1.1939-45 Star 2.Aircrew Europe Star 3.Defence Medal 4.War Medal 5.Australian Service Medal.
